Q I am a housewife in my 40s; please let me know if there are any foods that are good for fibromyalgia.

A Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids with anti-inflammatory effects (salmon, mackerel, perilla oil) and foods rich in magnesium (nuts, spinach, tofu) are helpful. Since there are studies linking vitamin D deficiency to fibromyalgia, exposure to sunlight and the consumption of oily fish are recommended. Fermented foods are also beneficial for maintaining a balance of gut microorganisms.

Detailed Answer

Anti-inflammatory foods and nutrients that support the nervous system are helpful in managing fibromyalgia. Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) reduce neuroinflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin E2 synthesis. Magnesium acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist to suppress central sensitization, and blood magnesium levels tend to be lower in fibromyalgia patients. Since vitamin D deficiency exacerbates muscle pain and fatigue, it should be supplemented with salmon and egg yolks, along with exposure to sunlight. Probiotic foods (kimchi and yogurt) are also recommended to regulate pain signals through the Gut-Brain Axis. In Korean traditional medicine, oily fish and nuts are classified as foods that replenish the fundamental energy of the kidneys. Based on the principle that the kidneys govern bones and fascia, when kidney energy is sufficient, nutrients are properly supplied to the bones and fascia. Black sesame seeds, black beans, and walnuts are representative foods that nourish the kidneys and are particularly beneficial for patterns of kidney dysfunction accompanied by chronic fatigue and generalized pain. Warm-natured spices such as ginger and cinnamon help with cold-type pain by revitalizing the warm energy of digestion and expelling cold energy and dampness. Black rice, turmeric, and lotus root are helpful for improving blood circulation, and patients are advised to naturally incorporate these foods into their daily diet during Dongjedang treatment.
