#Drug Combination / Interactions

Q I was prescribed anti-inflammatory painkillers at an orthopedic clinic. Can I receive them along with herbal medicine or acupuncture? (Office worker in their 40s)

A In general, acupuncture treatment is safe to use in combination with anti-inflammatory painkillers and may even help reduce the dosage. Since herbal medicines may interact with medications currently being taken, you must inform your doctor of your prescription details. If you are taking anticoagulants, caution is required when using certain blood-activating herbs.

Detailed Answer

NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen and naproxen) and acupuncture have different mechanisms of action, so combining them can produce additive effects. Several studies have shown that the group receiving both acupuncture and NSAIDs experienced greater pain reduction than the group receiving NSAIDs alone. In the case of herbal medicine, herbs that promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis (such as Salvia miltiorrhiza and Carthamus tinctorius) may interact with anticoagulants (warfarin and aspirin), so patients must share their current medications in advance. Although issues regarding overlapping ingredients with general anti-inflammatory painkillers are rare, Korean medicine doctors prescribe herbal medicine after identifying the patient's medications. At Dongjedang, we always verify current medications during the initial consultation. We exercise caution in selecting medicinal herbs for patients taking anticoagulants, blood pressure medication, or diabetes medication, and communicate with the prescribing physician if necessary. We prioritize the use of acupuncture and cupping to resolve blood stasis, and if herbal medicine is necessary, we formulate a safe combination of medicinal ingredients. By integrating hospital and Korean medicine treatments, the recovery period can be shortened.
