#Causes Explained

Q "I keep spraining my ankle; what is the reason it is becoming habitual? I have been spraining it repeatedly since high school." (College student in their 20s)

A If ligaments do not fully recover after the first sprain, proprioception around the joint deteriorates, leading to chronic ankle instability where the ankle easily sprains again even under the same stimulus. This is because the ligaments themselves harden in a stretched state, weakening the force that supports the joint. The biggest cause is insufficient initial treatment and rehabilitation.

Detailed Answer

Chronic ankle instability occurs due to the combined effect of mechanical laxity of the ligaments and a decline in neuromuscular control function following an acute sprain. If proprioceptive receptors within the ligaments are damaged, positional information transmitted to the brain becomes inaccurate, and muscle response slows down, making the ankle vulnerable to eversion impacts. If repeated without treatment, it can progress to cartilage damage and tendon rupture. In Korean medicine, recurrent sprains are explained as a condition where tendons and ligaments become loose and lose elasticity, along with a deficiency in liver and kidney function. When trauma is repeated, stagnant Qi and blood accumulate in the pathways; as the liver's function of nourishing tendons deteriorates, ligament elasticity decreases. A vicious cycle is created where the energy of the bones and bone marrow, governed by the kidneys, also weakens, further lowering joint stability. At Dongjedang, we aim to prevent recurrence by loosening adhered scar tissue with needle acupuncture, inducing ligament regeneration through fire acupuncture and thread embedding, and restoring liver and kidney function with herbal medicine tailored to the individual's constitution.
