Q Does exercise help with endometriosis?

A Regular aerobic exercise helps regulate estrogen levels and improve immune function. However, high-intensity exercise on days with severe menstrual pain can actually backfire.

Detailed Answer

Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (walking, swimming, cycling) for 30 minutes or more, 3-5 times a week, reduces body fat and thereby suppresses peripheral estrogen production, and raises immune NK cell activity to help clear endometrial tissue outside the uterus. It also raises the pain threshold through endorphin release. On the other hand, high-intensity exercise on days of severe menstrual pain can raise intra-abdominal pressure and promote retrograde menstruation.

Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective

At Dongjedang, we recommend walking for at least 30 minutes a day and pelvic stretching to support qi and blood circulation. During menstruation, switch to light yoga or walking, and supplement pelvic blood flow with large-cone moxibustion treatment before and after your period.
