#Food / Triggers

Q I have adenomyosis; are there any specific foods I should avoid? I am worried because my bleeding tends to be severe.

A Red meat, processed meat, trans fats, and refined carbohydrates can increase inflammation and estrogen imbalance, potentially worsening excessive bleeding and pain. Cold foods such as ice cream and frozen beverages also impair blood flow to the uterus, intensifying pain.

Detailed Answer

Since adenomyosis is an estrogen-dependent disease, foods that affect estrogen metabolism and inflammation are important. Omega-6 fatty acids found in red and processed meats, as well as trans fats in refined carbohydrates and processed foods, can increase the production of inflammatory prostaglandins, potentially exacerbating pain and bleeding. It is advisable to reduce alcohol and caffeine intake, as they can raise estrogen levels. On the other hand, oily fish (omega-3), cruciferous vegetables (broccoli and kale), and iron-rich foods (spinach and legumes) are beneficial for both suppressing inflammation and preventing anemia. Korean medicine clinics prioritize restricting cold and raw foods. This is because cooling the lower abdomen causes cold and dampness to accumulate, further hardening blood stasis in the uterine muscle layer. Avoiding ice cream, frozen beverages, and food straight from the refrigerator as much as possible, and keeping the area around the uterus warm with warm, easily digestible foods is the most basic dietary principle to enhance the effectiveness of treatment.
