#Causes Explained

Q I am an office worker in my 40s. I have developed hard knots in my shoulders and neck, and when I press on them, the pain spreads far away. Why does myofascial pain syndrome occur?

A Myofascial pain syndrome occurs when overactive tender points (trigger points) develop in the fascia that surrounds the muscles. The main causes include maintaining the same posture for a long time, repetitive movements, overload, and stress. It is characterized by referred pain that spreads far when pressed. Full recovery is possible with appropriate treatment received early on.

Detailed Answer

In Korean traditional medicine, myofascial pain syndrome is viewed as a state where waste products (stagnant blood) accumulated in the fascia become stagnant due to a blockage in the flow of Qi and blood. The liver nourishes muscles and tendons, while the spleen nourishes flesh (Qi and muscle); if the flow of Qi is blocked due to chronic stress or overwork, Qi and blood stagnate in the fascia, forming trigger points. In particular, if the major flow lines running along the fascia of the back of the neck, back, and lower back are blocked, it leads to widespread referred pain. At Dongjedang, our approach is based on external treatment, utilizing acupuncture to open the flow of Qi and blood, sharp needles to directly separate adhered fascia, and pharmacopuncture to reduce local inflammation. Together, we resolve internal waste and blood stasis, and restore digestive and muscle nutritional functions to create a fundamental state where trigger points do not recur.
