Q How do I do nasal irrigation, and how many times a day is appropriate?
A Pour lukewarm saline into one nostril and let it flow out the other side, about 1-2 times a day. The irrigation device must be dried and disinfected each time.
Detailed Answer
Proper Nasal Irrigation Method
- Prepare about 240 ml of lukewarm saline (0.9%, around body temperature of 37 degrees)
- Tilt your head 45 degrees to the side and place the nozzle in the upper nostril, letting the saline flow in slowly
- Allow the solution to drain out through the lower nostril (breathe through your mouth)
- Repeat the same on the other side
- After irrigation, gently blow your nose to remove any remaining liquid
Precautions
- Do not use cold or hot water (it irritates the mucosa)
- Wash and dry the device after each use, and disinfect it once a week
- When congestion is severe, irrigating after using a decongestant is more effective
- Those with eustachian tube (ear-nose connection) problems should not apply strong pressure
At Dongjedang, we recommend nasal irrigation twice a day as standard supportive care alongside herbal treatment.
