#Prognosis / Recovery

Q Is peripheral neuropathy curable? How long does treatment take to improve?

A If the cause can be eliminated (vitamin deficiency, alcohol, toxins, etc.), a complete cure is possible. For diabetic cases, the realistic goal is to inhibit progression and improve symptoms through blood sugar control. The duration of treatment varies from 3 to 12 months depending on the severity and cause, and recovery is better with early treatment.

Detailed Answer

The prognosis of peripheral neuropathy varies significantly depending on the cause and severity. Types where the cause can be eliminated (Vitamin B12 deficiency, alcohol, drug toxicity, hypothyroidism): Significant recovery is possible within a few months if the cause is corrected. Diabetic: Strict blood sugar control can prevent the progression of nerve damage and allow for some functional recovery, but complete normalization is difficult for severe damage that has already occurred. Idiopathic (unknown cause): The progression is slow, but symptoms can be managed with treatment. Since the rate of nerve regeneration is very slow at 1–3 mm per day, it takes 2–3 months to feel the effects of treatment. In Korean medicine, it is believed that the environment for nerve regeneration is established when Jeonggi (the body's restorative capacity) is sufficient. When the functions of the spleen and kidneys are restored and Jeonghyeol (fundamental Qi and blood) is replenished, nerve myelin regeneration proceeds, albeit slowly. In the clinical practice at Dongjedang, numbness and cold sensations decrease after 4–8 weeks of intensive treatment (acupuncture, moxibustion, and pharmacopuncture) 2–3 times a week in the initial stage. Subsequently, when the foundation of Qi and blood is strengthened through the combined use of herbal medicine, sensory perception shows a gradual recovery. Since the treatment period lengthens the longer symptoms persist, an early visit is crucial.
