#Food / Triggers

Q I heard that blood becomes thicker after sudden hearing loss. Are there foods I should be careful about?

A Salty foods, greasy foods high in saturated fat, and excessive caffeine or alcohol raise blood viscosity, worsening inner-ear microcirculation and hindering recovery. Oily fish, vegetables, and adequate water intake are helpful.

Detailed Answer

The cochlea of the inner ear receives blood through only very fine capillaries, so when the blood thickens this supply decreases and hair-cell recovery slows. Excess sodium causes fluid retention and blood-pressure fluctuation, while excess saturated fat and cholesterol narrow the vessels. Oily fish rich in omega-3, antioxidant vegetables, and at least 1.5 L of water a day help restore inner-ear blood flow.

Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective

As part of improving a blood-stasis (eo-hyeol) constitution, Dongjedang recommends foods that support blood circulation. Drink warm water in small amounts several times a day, and avoid cold foods and late-night meals to reduce the digestive burden. Spicy, salty, and stimulating foods can drive heat up to the head and worsen tinnitus, so it is best to avoid them.
