#Causes Explained

Q After my gallbladder removal surgery, my stomach feels bloated and I get diarrhea whenever I eat fatty food. Why does this happen?

A The gallbladder normally stores bile and releases it all at once during meals to help digest fat. Once it's removed, bile trickles out continuously instead, so digesting fatty food -- in particular -- becomes slower, which can cause bloating and diarrhea after meals. Your body usually adapts over several weeks to months.

Detailed Answer

After gallbladder removal, the function of storing and concentrating bile, then releasing it during meals, is gone. Instead, bile continuously trickles from the liver into the intestine in small amounts. This means that especially after large, fatty meals, fat digestion doesn't go smoothly, which can cause bloating, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea after eating (bile acid diarrhea). Most people adapt to this new bile flow over several weeks to months, and a gradual low-fat diet helps support that adjustment. This surgery was necessary and already completed -- what you're in now is the recovery period where your body adapts to digestion without a gallbladder.

Our Korean Medicine Clinic's Perspective

Our clinic views this state as one where the digestive function -- which breaks down fat and moves it downward -- has been disrupted along with the energy consumed by surgery. Korean medicine treatment doesn't replace the surgery; rather, it plays a supportive role in restoring reduced digestive strength and energy so the body can adapt well to its new digestive rhythm.
