Q Does Korean medicine tonic really help immunity? Is there evidence?

A Herbs used in immune tonics, such as Astragalus, have shown immune-modulating effects in modern studies, including NK cell activation.

Detailed Answer

Astragalus (Hwanggi) has been reported in modern pharmacological studies to activate natural killer (NK) cells, promote macrophage proliferation, and induce interferon. Ginsenosides in Ginseng have also shown immune-modulating functions in numerous studies. Of course, since the formula composition varies depending on individual constitution and condition, this should be approached differently from a simple health supplement.

Our Korean Medicine Clinic's Perspective

At Dongjedang, when prescribing an immune tonic, we don't simply administer Astragalus or Ginseng—we first assess the patient's Lung Qi status and Spleen-Stomach digestive capacity. If the foundation is weak, taking a tonic can actually create digestive burden, so the sequence and composition of the formula matter greatly.
