Q My athlete's foot symptoms are gone. Do I need to continue Korean medicine treatment?
A The disappearance of symptoms does not mean the fungus has been completely eliminated. Maintenance treatment is especially important for onychomycosis or chronic, recurrent athlete's foot. In Korean medicine, after symptoms resolve we move on to the stage of improving the Spleen-Stomach damp-heat constitution, aiming to prevent recurrence.
Detailed Answer
In athlete's foot, the disappearance of symptoms is not a cure. With skin athlete's foot, fungi remain within the keratin even after symptoms disappear, so it recurs when the environment becomes favorable. Antifungals must be used for an additional one to two weeks even after symptoms are gone to lower the recurrence rate. For onychomycosis, treatment must continue until the nail has fully grown out and been replaced by a normal nail.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
At Dongjedang, we view the period after symptom resolution as a "golden opportunity for constitutional improvement." During this time, when Spleen-Stomach damp-heat is being resolved and the immune terrain is being restored, we shift the prescription from heat-clearing and detoxifying to tonifying the Spleen and boosting qi (bobi-ikgi). Preparing maintenance herbal medicine ahead of seasons when fungi become active, such as spring and summer, is the key to keeping the recurrence interval long.
