Q Is it okay to give acupuncture to a child? Won't the pain cause trauma?

A Pediatric acupuncture uses thinner needles than standard adult acupuncture and minimizes insertion depth and time to reduce pain. Most children adapt after 2-3 sessions.

Detailed Answer

When having a child receive acupuncture, what guardians worry about most is the pain and the fear experience. Pediatric acupuncture takes this into account and approaches it differently from adults.

The Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective

At Dongjedang, we use ultra-fine needles of 0.16mm or less and proceed with a quick-insert, quick-withdraw (速刺速拔) method that removes the needle immediately after insertion. We explain the procedure to the child beforehand and have the guardian stay alongside to provide psychological reassurance. In the first session we treat only 1-2 points and gradually expand while observing the response. In practice, many children come in on their own after 2-3 sessions.
