Hwa-byung

Hwabyung is characterized by worsening as emotional suppression persists. When unresolved chronic stress—such as workplace conflicts, family issues, or financial difficulties—continues, liver qi stagnation intensifies and heat accumulates. In particular, situations where one cannot speak up even if they want to—such as abuse of power, domestic violence, and caregiving burdens—are the strongest triggers. Identifying the causes of stress and changing the environment is essential alongside treatment. At Dongjedang, during consultations, we explore the causes of stress and determine if changes are currently possible. If the sources of stress persist during treatment, we strengthen acupuncture treatments (specifically acupoints on the top of the foot and palm) to rapidly release pent-up anger and maintain stronger prescriptions for liver qi stagnation. We actively encourage the expression of emotions through writing an emotional diary or conversing with trusted individuals.
