Q Are there foods that worsen allergic rhinitis?

A Cold foods, dairy, and wheat-based foods can generate phlegm-fluid (dameum) and worsen swelling of the nasal mucosa.

Detailed Answer

From a Western medical view, certain allergenic foods (peanuts, shellfish, etc.) can trigger oral allergy syndrome, but the relationship between food and general rhinitis flare-ups varies greatly between individuals. Cold foods such as ice cream and frozen treats can cause temporary worsening by constricting and dilating the nasal blood vessels.

Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective

At Dongjedang, we consider that excessive intake of cold-natured foods, dairy, and wheat-based foods causes phlegm-fluid (dameum) to accumulate in the Spleen and Stomach, hindering the circulation of Lung qi. We recommend warm-natured ginger and jujube tea, and especially advise avoiding cold drinks on an empty stomach in the morning.
