#Causes Explained

Q What causes allergic rhinitis?

A IgE antibodies overreact to allergens such as house dust mites and pollen, causing repeated inflammation of the nasal mucosa.

Detailed Answer

Allergic rhinitis occurs when immunoglobulin E (IgE) binds to an allergen and triggers mast cells to release histamine. The hallmark symptoms are sneezing, clear runny nose, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes. House dust mites are the most common cause, while spring pollen and pet dander are also major triggers.

Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective

At Dongjedang, we view allergic rhinitis as a condition combining Lung qi deficiency (pyegi-heo) and Wind-Cold (punghan). When the Lung's defensive qi (wigi) weakens and can no longer block external cold, the nasal mucosa becomes hypersensitive and sneezing and runny nose recur. We use Okbyeongpung-san (Jade Windscreen powder) to reinforce Lung qi and improve the underlying constitution.
